What is Cosmetic Surgery?

The origin of cosmetic surgery date back to over 4,000 years ago but it was not until the late 19th century that the US medical community embraced reconstructive surgery and the history of plastic surgery in the United States began. At a similar time in the UK the foundations of cosmetic surgery were being laid by notable, if isolated, achievements of British surgeons in the realm of reconstructive surgery.

The development of plastic surgery in the UK and US was heavily influenced by war. World War I presented physicians with scores of severe facial wounds and burns, changing the history of plastic surgery. Modern weapons caused types and severity of injuries that were unprecedented in the history of plastic surgery. Some of the greatest medical talent devoted themselves fully both to exploring the history of plastic surgery and creating new techniques to treat men maimed by the war.

It was at this time that cosmetic surgery really started to evolve as surgeons realised the link between appearance, happiness, confidence and ultimately a persons success.

The history of cosmetic surgery in America owes much to the American Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons (ASPRS) which was established in 1931 whist in the UK the British Association of Plastic Surgery (BAPS) first met in 1946. The main principles behind its introduction was to control and safeguard the interests of surgeons practicing in this specialty. Then in 1948 The British Journal of Plastic Surgery first appeared and this continues today, all be it with a change of name, to the Journal of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (JPRAS).

The modern, and more well-known, history of cosmetic surgery really began in the UK in the 1970s when pioneers brought cosmetic surgery to a wider audience and helped to fuel the enormous advances in treatment and awareness among the public. In Britain today there are daily magazine and press articles as well as before and after cosmetic surgery television shows. Cosmetic surgery is very much accepted into our culture and is set to continue to grow.

The most popular procedures in the UK are now breast enlargement, breast reductions, liposuction, eyelid surgery, face and neck lifts, tummy tuck and rhinoplasty (nose corrective surgery) with an estimated 100,000 surgical procedures being carried out in the UK in 2006.
